Major Project

Last year I’ve began to notice that I’m very much into game environments. Producing objects that relate to game environments makes me feel like I’m in my element. With that said, I think that it would only be sensible for me in future, to concentrate exclusively on game environments. Now, the Major Project is a very important project for me, since with the completion of it I’m expecting to become a professional artist.

As for what I’m going to produce this time, I do have an idea for a game aimed at over -18's that involves the 2012 phenomenon, but it certainly needs developing. Before we move on to the idea I would like to talk a little bit about the 2012 phenomenon first. The ancient Mayans had created a long count calendar which according to some archaeologists and mythologists comes to an end on the 21st of December 2012. Since the 2012 phenomenon has been hyped up for so many years, many out there came up with so many theories. Some claim that the Mayans warned us of a comet that had hit the earth before, but apparently there is no solid evidence backing up such claims. Nevertheless, many say that the ancient Mayans did not predict any threats to the earth, actually according to some, 21st of December 2012 marks a new age in the development of mankind. There is far more theories on 2012 that can be found mainly on the internet that are taken by some serious while by others (including myself) not.

The story involves an 18 year old high school student named Gabriel Goodwin from Morgan City (Louisiana, USA) who experiences a weird dream on the 20th-21st December 2012. In his dream he finds himself in some sort of underworld where he is to find the Mayan long cycle calendar and destroy it, so that the 21st of 2012 event never occurs.

It’s Monday the 20th of December 2012, Gabriel is on his way to school. Once he arrived at the gates of his school he sees his friend Jake; Gabriel: Hey Jake, you seem rather tired today. Jake: “Well, last night I was watching this TV program until late at night, discussing the end of the Mayan calendar. Apparently tomorrow it’ll come to an end, which according to some people means the end of mankind.” Gabriel: “That can’t be true, just because an ancient calendar comes to an end tomorrow, doesn’t mean the world will come to an end, that’s just ridiculous man.” Jake: “Well, I didn’t say it was true, but some of the evidence they were presenting seemed quite convincing dude. Gabriel: “Well in that case, I’ll do some research on that as soon as I get home from school! Jake: “You better be quick just encase something happens …I mean you never know (laughing).” Gabriel: “Whatever Jake, whatever!” With that said, Gabriel and Jake made their ways to their classrooms. However, as soon as Gabriel enters his classroom, he notices some students talking about 2012. This was the moment when Gabriel really began to think about the 2012 theory. His mind was filled with mixed feelings about the whole thing. He actually was shocked at the fact that Jake was not the only one discussing this matter. During the entire school day, Gabriel was physically there, but mentally somewhere else. He was thinking to himself: “Could there be such possibility? Could this actually be happening? He was desperate to engage in research. The school bell rings, it was finally home time; Gabriel rushed out of school as if he had to catch the bus. Once he arrived home, his mother asked him how his day was, Gabriel replied: “It was okay, mom” and sprinted upstairs into his room to turn his computer on. As soon as his computer was ready to be used he began his research on the 2012 theory. Soon Gabriel found himself confronted with many speculations, but not enough evidence for the theory. However, one thing seemed to be convincing to him; and that was the end date of the Mayan calendar; 21st of December 2012. As soon as Gabriel began to get deeper into it, his eyes began to feel heavy, after a long day of deep thinking. Finally, he fell asleep on the keyboard. Soon he found himself in an unfamiliar environment, which seemed rather dark and threatening. At this stage the game begins...

As I mentioned before the story is currently under development, there is still a lot to be added to it, however, while the story is under development, I'll still post research material relating to the idea.
